You only have to let the soft animal of your body. love what it loves ~ Mary Oliver
Imagine you are in your favorite place outside, seeing all the shades of color and light, hearing the sounds, noticing the smells and the touches from nature all around that make this place so special to you. Take a deep breath and melt into the feeling; the ease, the quiet joy, the way tension melts away when you are rooted here in nature. Did you know yoga was born thousands of years ago from a place and a feeling just like this?
Maybe you are searching among the branches, for what only appears in the roots~ Rumi
What most people know today as yoga is mostly physical movements done indoors with others, often highly choreographed or even competitive. When we trace yoga back to its roots in India however, we find the earliest teachers spent their time outside in deep harmony with nature’s cycles. Inspired by vibrant forests, majestic mountains, moving rivers, and wild creatures, they developed yoga as practices that increase our wholeness, health and happiness by bringing to balance the natural elements and energies that run through our bodies and minds.
Yoga asana (pose) is a steady and joyful practice, best approached with an attitude of ease ~Yoga Sutras of Pantajali
Maintaining this physical and energetic balance in our bodies and minds becomes even more important in a highly networked world where we rarely unplug and often are far removed from nature’s rhythms. When we step outside of all the expectations and return to the roots of yoga as described by the sage Patanjali, the practice holds a tremendous ability to bring us to that same feeling we find when we are at ease in nature- that we are at home and can relax here, just as we are.
Our Second Saturday Standing Yoga and Nature Walk starts with a steady and joyful outdoor 30 minute standing yoga practice for any level, followed by a relaxed walk to immerse in the beauty of nature in the Marshlands. Won’t it be lovely to continue the rest of the day and week with a little lighter step and spirit? It’s free, yet space is limited.
