Some of the best observations of the marshlands’ ecology can be made from a canoe or kayak. Paddling along quietly, it is possible to get close to birds, beaver or river otter that might otherwise be shy of humans or the noise of motor boats. You can glide past flowers such as pickerelweed, observe rustling stands of wild rice, or take in smaller wildlife such as butterflies and dragonflies.
Bordentown Beach is a convenient location to launch a canoe or kayak for Crosswicks Creek. Launch locations are also at Watson Woods in Roebling Park for Watson’s Creek and the Trenton Boat Launch for the Delaware River.

DANGEROUS TIDES, BE SAFE! The waterways of the Abbott Marshlands can be extremely dangerous because of tidal currents. The water is deep and currents may be fast and forceful. Wear a life vest at all times and follow boating safety rules. For inexperienced paddlers, the best way to explore the marsh is a guided boat trip.
Check a local newspaper or on-line sources for tide tables, and be aware of the changing tidal currents while out on the water. Note that the timing of Bordentown tides is about the same as for Trenton and there is about a one- hour delay for Watson Woods. For emergencies while on the water call 911.
D&R Greenway Land Trust created a wonderful Paddling Tour of the Abbott Marshlands . Check out the details before your trip!
