The Tulpehaking Nature Center was officially opened in 2014 as the gateway to the Abbott Marshlands, and an important part of the exterior landscaping plan was the Marsh Native Plant Garden. The garden was dedicated to Mary and Charlie Leck for their many years of dedicated research into the plants and animals of the marshlands.
The Native Plant Garden design incorporates shrubs and herbaceous perennials that can be found in the upland areas surrounding the marsh, the lowland woods, and at the water’s edge. Several native tree species can also be found in the garden area.
If you’d like to see some of the aquatic plants found in the marsh, you’ll need to take a walk down the hill to see the water. The plants of the marshlands supported the first inhabitants of this land, the Lenape, for thousands of years. Many of the plants that they would have depended upon in their daily life can be found in and along the water’s edge.
