Renovations at 157 Westcott Ave. (Hamilton) are completed. Once a permit of occupancy is granted, work can begin to make the center available to visitors for programs and as a place to learn about Abbott Marshlands nature and archaeology.
Mercer County is currently working on details for furnishings, internet connections, and displays so that it can be opened and operational as soon as possible. The opening and dedication are expected in October 2014.
The addition contains a large classroom space that’s approximately 1400 square feet. A partition will allow separation into two. This space will be available for classes and for meetings. The outdoor pergola is 2,000 square feet.
There will be restroom facilities, accessible from outdoors, available during times when Roebling Park is open.
Parking will be near the Watson House. No visitor parking will be provided on the street.
Initially, there will be temporary exhibits for visitors. Later, when funding becomes available, permanent exhibits will be installed. These will focus on the contributions of Charles Conrad Abbott to our understanding of the marshlands natural systems, as well as their archaeological legacy.
Visitors will be guided to explore the nearly trails and to discover the marsh on their own or with a guide.
The center was funded by a Green Acres grant awarded to D&R Greenway Land Trust and with the Mercer County Open Space Preservation Trust Fund.
