Science at the Abbott Marshlands:
NUI (Noor_Ul_Imam) School of Monmouth Junction 5th Grade Field Trip
On March 13th, 48 5th graders visited Spring Lake – Roebling Park to explore symbiotic relationships among organisms and collect data for science fair projects. Prior to their visit students had been assigned two organisms ranging from bacteria to beaver so that they could begin thinking about the kinds of plants and animals they might see.
The tour began with an hour-long walk during which they saw Spring Lake, the beaver pond, and the woods on the island, and learned about the organisms that live there. Some students collected water samples and small amounts of mud for Winogradsky columns (to test for anaerobic bacteria) and determined the pH and temperature of the lake and the beaver pond. Others examined forest plots for plant diversity. Students will present their observations and data at their school science fair at the end of March.
