Attention History fans! Get a head start on celebrating the USA’s 250th year by learning about the Second Skirmish at Crosswicks. This indoor program will be held at the Tulpehaking Nature Center.

Independent historian Matthew A. Leilich discusses a little known but important conflict of the American Revolution: The Second Skirmish at Crosswicks Creek. This confrontation in June of 1778 effected the outcome of the more well-known Battle of Monmouth. General Dickensen wrote to General Washington during the fighting:

“Unexpectedly, the Enemy made their appearance, about six o’clock this Evening, on the other side the Drawbridge—I take this to be, their advanced party, consisting of about seven, or eight hundred Men this is the Column, which I mentioned to your Excellency, that was advancing on the Bordentown road—but from the best intelligence, their main body, lays on the Allentown road—they were busily employed in pulling down a Barn, to rebuild the Drawbridge, but our Artillery & Musketry, effectually put a stop to their Operations, for this Evening—I have taken the necessary precautions, to prevent a surprise—& tomorrow, shall dispute the passages with them, unless they outflank us.”
